Experienced Surgeons, Innovative Treatments
At Boulder Community Health (BCH), our goal is to provide every patient with innovative, quality care. This is especially true in orthopedics, which requires highly-skilled surgeons, nurses and therapists to assist with and perform intricate procedures that can relieve pain and improve your mobility.
By using the latest technology and the most advanced treatment options, our specialists can offer the best solutions for you and get you back to your life and the activities you love as quickly as possible.
For patients needing hip or knee surgery, BCH offers a wide range of patient-centered approaches, including minimally-invasive options and the advanced Mako Robotic Surgery System. BCH offers the largest and most experienced group of Mako surgeons in Colorado providing both knee and hip procedures.
Meet Mako: One System for Three Procedures
BCH was the first facility in Colorado to use revolutionary Mako surgery for total knee replacement. In addition, BCH orthopedic surgeons offer Mako partial knee replacement surgery and Mako total hip replacement surgery.
Because of the personalized surgical experience (each plan is based on the patient’s specific diagnosis and anatomy), Mako is changing the way joint sufferers receive care.
During a health lecture in April, orthopedic surgeon C. Brian Blackwood, M.D., of the BoulderCentre for Orthopedics and Spine explained: “The (Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology) process starts with a CT scan of your joint, which is used to generate a 3D virtual model of your unique anatomy. This model is loaded into the Mako system software and used to create a personalized pre-operative plan for positioning your new hip or knee components.”
With this 3D technology, your surgeon can ensure the implant's ideal compatibility with your specific anatomy and pre-plan your procedure to maximize results.
“The Mako procedure also is a less invasive surgery with multiple benefits, including a shorter recovery time and more natural feeling joint,” says Dr. Blackwood.
Total Hip Replacement
For those who suffer from inflammatory or non-inflammatory degenerative joint disease (DJD) of the hip, BCH offers Mako Total Hip Replacement surgery. Foothills Hospital is the only facility in Boulder County to provide this procedure. The Mako System is designed to treat a variety of hip-related pain resulting from DJD conditions such as osteoarthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis and hip dysplasia.
During total hip replacement surgery, the damaged parts of the hip socket and thigh bone are replaced with an artificial hip joint, also known as a prosthesis or implant.
Total Knee Replacement
Mako Total Knee is for people with severe knee pain or stiffness resulting from noninflammatory degenerative joint disease (including osteoarthritis, traumatic arthritis or avascular necrosis), rheumatoid arthritis or post-traumatic arthritis, and those who haven’t experienced adequate relief with conservative treatment options, like bracing, medication or joint fluid supplements.
Mako total knee replacement reduces pain and restores the motion and function of the knee.
Partial Knee Replacement
If someone is diagnosed with early to mid-stage arthritis, where only one or two compartments of the knee are diseased, a partial knee replacement may be recommended by a doctor.
Mako can help relieve the pain caused by osteoarthritis (OA) in one or two of the three compartments of the knee. With partial knee replacement, only the damaged area of the knee joint is replaced, helping to minimize trauma to healthy bone tissue and ligaments that surround the knee.
Seeking Treatment: Don’t Delay
BCH’s Foothills Hospital is nationally recognized for knee and hip replacement by The Joint Commission – the Gold Seal of Approval – in health care. More than 800 knee and hip surgeries are performed every year at Foothill Hospital.
