Organ & Tissue Donation
One donor can save up to eight lives with organ donation and save or heal 75 lives through tissue donation—saving and healing over 500,000 lives in the United States every year.
Boulder Community Health partners with Donor Alliance to provide organ and tissue donation options for patients.
How can I become an organ donor?
There are two main ways to become an organ donor:
- You can elect to become an organ and tissue donor when you renew your drivers license in any state, or
- Register with Donor Alliance online in Colorado or Wyoming
You may also be able to include your wish to become an organ donor on your Living Will, MDPOA or CPR directive documents.
What organs & tissues can be donated?
Heart, kidneys, liver, lung, pancreas and small intestine are the organs which can be transplanted; bone, corneas, heart valves, veins, skin, tendons and ligaments are among the tissues.
How organ & tissue donation works
When a person passes at Boulder Community Health, BCH will follow these steps:
- BCH contacts Donor Alliance who evaluates if donation is possible.
- Donor Alliance talks with the patient's family about donation and honoring their loved one's decision.
- A national database is used to identify the best recipient match for the donor.
- Donor Alliance ensures a donor's gifts are safely transported and received.
