October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we’re using this opportunity to spread the word about taking steps to detect breast cancer early.
Breast cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point. The good news is that most women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early.
A mammogram – the screening test for breast cancer – can help find breast cancer early when it’s easier to treat. Your health care provider can help you decide when and how often to get mammograms.
What Do I Ask My Health Care Provider?
Use this list of questions to start a conversation about mammograms with your health care provider:
Am I at a higher-than-average risk of breast cancer?
Can we discuss the benefits and risks of mammography for me?
When should I begin mammography screening?
How often should I get a mammogram?
What should I do to prepare for a mammogram?
How long will it take to get the results of my mammogram?
