BCH’s Dr. Srini Iyengar spoke with Nicole Brady of Channel 7 on an innovative treatment for patients with severe aortic stenosis, a condition that when left untreated, can lead to heart failure. Explains Dr. Iyengar: “Five years ago, all we had was open heart surgery to treat patients with severe aortic stenosis. Now there is a procedure called TAVR – transcatheter aortic valve replacement.”
TAVR is performed through an artery in the leg or arm as opposed to opening the chest, resulting in quicker recovery times and shorter hospital stays. This is important for patients that are considered intermediate to high risk for open heart surgery. Says Iyengar: “We can replace that old valve with a brand new valve, usually in an hour’s time and have the patient home in one to two days.”
