Mind Body Medicine

Incorporating Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), Acupuncture & Reiki

Mind Body Medicine (MBM) is a neuroscience-based integrative healthcare approach to treating chronic physical and mental health conditions. This process uses the conscious mind to influence some of the seemingly “automatic” processes in the brain and body. These automatic processes within the nervous system influence changes in stress hormone levels, pain response and immune function.

Mind Body Medicine is effective for individuals experiencing distress from physical symptoms that cannot be explained by active structural tissue damage. This includes many different types of conditions: hypertension, irritable bowel syndrome, weakness, fatigue, nausea, dizziness, tinnitus, insomnia, chronic back pain, neck pain, fibromyalgia symptoms, repetitive strain injuries, headaches/migraines, depression, anxiety/panic, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and some trauma.

The evidenced-based services listed below follow the trauma-informed MBM guiding principles of providing holistic support by empowering patients to take charge of their health and heal themselves with education, compassion and self-care.

Each Center for Mind Body Medicine patient will receive a unique set of recommendations based on need. The Mind Body Medicine program is focused on reducing symptoms of chronic pain through Pain Reprocessing Theory (PRT), as well as using mind body healing touch treatments of acupuncture and reiki.

The Center for Mind Body Medicine is located on the first floor of the Della Cava Family Medical Pavilion. For information, please call 303-415-8615.

NEW PATIENTS: PRT at CMBM is an integrative health approach to chronic pain. The CMBM team works collaboratively with various medical providers to support patients in recovery. PRT is not a stand-alone alternative treatment for active structural tissue damage
or issues related to substance abuse/dependency or severe/persistent mental illness. The PRT therapist does not prescribe medication to any patients. A patient experiencing any of the above concerns should
not be referred for PRT and instead referred to the most medically appropriate treatment.

Relief for Chronic Pain with Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT)

PRT is a unique behavioral health therapy aimed at reducing the symptoms of chronic pain by helping the brain unlearn pain. This cognitive approach is comprised of neuroscience-backed education about pain, evidence gathering about pain experiences, somatic tracking to help deactivate pain signals and strategies to sustain progress. The goal of PRT is to help break the cycle of chronic pain by helping people change the way they think about and emotionally experience their pain. The Center for Mind Body Medicine offers PRT through individual therapy or an eight-week group therapy. Call 303-415-8650 to inquire about group information and meeting dates and times.

PRT is most effective for patients whose pain is not explained by the following active structural tissue damage issues: cancer/tumor, infection/disease, neurological/nerve damage, fracture/sprain, or autoimmune disorders. However, people could benefit from PRT if their pain originated from one of the above issues but has not resolved for at least three months after completing recommended medical interventions and treatments. PRT is not appropriate for people experiencing substance abuse/dependency or severe/persistent mental illness.

One of the most important aspects of PRT is to ensure that pain cannot be explained by active structural tissue damage. Therefore, all patients must complete a physical exam and be referred to Center for Mind Body Medicine by a member of their medical team. This process means that BCH’s Center for Mind Body Medicine does not accept self-referrals.

If you are a current BCH patient, please complete this appointment with your BCH medical provider team. They can complete an internal referral to CMBM.

If you are not a current BCH patient, please have your medical provider team complete this referral form and fax it to CMBM at 303-415-8608.

She also believes that a good dose of humor, courage, and grace can help with this process!

Hannah is passionate about working with people who experience chronic pain. Throughout her work and personal life, she has witnessed the many ways chronic pain can erode a person's sense of self and connection to what is most important to them. Hannah is here to provide unconditional compassion and safety to people as they go through their chronic pain healing journey. Through this work at the Center for Mind Body Medicine, Hannah knows that people do recover and make transformational changes that can lead to building a meaningful life.

Integrative Health Care for Mind-Body Treatment

The Center for Mind Body also provides integrative health care to support its patients, which include acupuncture and Reiki.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture provides a holistic approach to medicine, connecting the mind, body and spirit. Hair-thin needles are inserted into acupoints along pathways of energy throughout the body, accessing the body’s natural ability to heal. The stimulation of these points creates balance in mind and body, calms the nervous system, and provides pain relief. A four-week acupuncture program is recommended for each patient.

Reiki

Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) is a healing therapy practiced originally in Japan. It can be used to facilitate the person's own healing response. Reiki is based on the belief that universal energy supports the body's innate healing abilities. Practitioners seek to access this energy, allowing it to flow to the body and facilitate healing. They place their hands lightly on or just above the person receiving treatment in order to support the body's innate healing energy.

Reiki can help provide the following benefits:

  • Deep relaxation
  • Stress reduction
  • Relief from chronic pain and anxiety
  • Improved overall health and well-being

The natural state of the mind-body connection is one of harmony and well-being. The principle that one can learn to create positive thoughts, influencing the body’s physical responses, thereby decreasing stress and illness. Reiki allows one to relax deeply to find this wholeness inside.
